Health Care After the Midterms: Lowering Costs and Achieving Universal Coverage
Universal health coverage is a goal that most Americans support, and strategies for lowering health care costs are a continuing debate for providers and consumers. The big question is always “how”? What structural changes make sense? How do we maintain and improve quality of care, while reducing costs?
U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) is a national leader on health care policy and a champion for affordable, quality health care for all. She authored major provisions in the Affordable Care Act and legislation on issues including drug prices, home health policy, Alzheimer’s care, and women’s heart disease. Her Excellence in Mental Health Act created a new comprehensive, bipartisan approach to treating mental health and addiction in the community. She currently serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health Care.

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan is a national leader of the effort to make sure all people have affordable, quality health care, including mental health care and prescription drugs. She led the fight to fund our community health centers, and her bill to extend full funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program for 10 years was signed into law last year. Her Know the Lowest Price Act, which cracks down on gag clauses that stop pharmacists from telling customers that they could pay less for their prescription if they pay out of pocket, is now law. In 2014, a version of the Excellence in Mental Health Act that Senator Stabenow authored with Senator Roy Blunt was signed into law, marking one of the most significant steps forward in community mental health funding in decades.
