Loosening the Barriers Between Payers, Providers, Patients and Consumers

Healthcare payers and providers have historically had combative relationships due to a fee-for-service incentive structure that put their business goals at odds. Now, more payers and providers are working together, driven by rising healthcare costs and the value-based payments and population-level health initiatives designed to address them. Partnerships range from data sharing to bundled packages — and in some cases, even collective efforts to save health system infrastructure. There is now an expanding array of options to work together for a common goal, including accountable care organizations, patient-centered medical homes and pay-for-performance programs. Partnerships are also linked to more demands for consumer choice and a growing Medicare population.

David Blumenthal, MD is president of The Commonwealth Fund, a national philanthropy engaged in independent research on health and social policy issues. Dr. Blumenthal is formerly the Samuel O. Thier professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief health information and innovation officer at Partners Healthcare System. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the national coordinator for health information technology, with the charge to build an interoperable, private, and secure nationwide health information system and to support the widespread, meaningful use of health IT. He succeeded in putting in place one of the largest publicly funded infrastructure investments the nation has ever made in such a short time period, in health care or any other field.

Laura Kaiser joined SSM Health as president/chief executive officer in May 2017, bringing 30+ years of experience in health care strategy, improving clinical quality, fueling innovation, managing operational performance and growth, leading change management and successfully facilitating health care integration. Laura previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Intermountain Healthcare. She also served at Ascension Health in several senior leadership roles including regional executive for the Gulf Coast/Florida region and president/chief executive officer at Sacred Heart Health System in Pensacola, Florida.

Mario Schlosser is the chief executive officer and co-founder of Oscar, a health-insurance start-up that is using technology, design, and data to help humanize and simplify healthcare. Previously, he co-founded the largest social gaming company in Latin America, where he led the company's analytics and game design practices. At Bridgewater Associates, Mario developed analytical trading models as a senior investment associate. Prior to Bridgewater, he worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company in Europe, the U.S. and Brazil. As a visiting scholar at Stanford University, Mario wrote and co-authored 10 computer science publications, including one of the most-cited computer science papers published in the past decade, in which he developed an algorithm to securely compute trust in randomized networks.

Terry Shaw is president and chief executive officer for AdventHealth. In this role, he provides leadership for one of the largest faith-based health care systems in the United States, comprising 47 hospital campuses across nine states, and a continuum of integrated care that includes urgent care centers, home health, hospice, physician practices and skilled nursing facilities. Shaw's career with AdventHealth spans more than 30 years. In that time, he has played a pivotal role in defining the organization’s vision and direction through his broad understanding and deep knowledge of health care finance, information technology and overall operations. Prior to becoming president and CEO of the organization, Shaw served as its executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief operations officer.
